Chair’s Report : AGM 2008

It has now been almost 12 months since we first established TCC as an unincorporated organisation and I am delighted to report that great progress has been made in that time – both for TCC as an organisation and for the campaign itself.

As an organisation we started the year with a core team of only 3 which has now expanded to include a dedicated webmaster and a member with a specific remit for handling contact with the 3rd sector.  Additional new core team members are coming on board, which in principle will help to ease the workload of the existing team, but in reality I suspect the increased capacity will mean we do extra things and all remain just as busy!

I’m sure you are aware from your visits, to the website and the forum, of the work we have been doing, but to recap here are some of the highlights from the last year.

  • Enhanced website with an average of 1,500 unique visitors each month
  • Publication and launch of ‘Voices of the Victims’
  • Cross party working and increased support from MPs
  • Extensive media coverage from publications as diverse as the Sunday Times to the Portsmouth News
  • New Media award nomination
  • Regional meetings held
  • Petition now reaching close to the 2,000 mark
  • Formal response submitted to HMRC’s consultation document

There has been a vast amount of case work undertaken in the last year with:

  • 500 cases being handled
  • 450+ people being provided with case help through the forum
  • 1,500 dispute packs downloaded to date

In the last year we have also met with lawyers who are provided free support for us to look at a long-term, legal solution to the tax credits debacle and a follow up meeting is scheduled for 21st November to progress this.  For legal reasons I am limited as to what can be said in an open document, but rest assured we are working hard to find a solution for the 2 million people affected each year.  To support this a limited company has been established for TCC and to help drive this forward we need to fundraise to ensure we have the costs required should a court case be required – whilst the legal advice is on a pro bono basis, we would need to be able to demonstrate that we have funds.

The coming year will see us continue to deliver high levels of service to claimants needing case advice and a continued focus on the campaign.  Fundraising will need to be given a higher profile and more attention to facilitate the legal work.

I would like to thank the core team for the time and effort they have put in over the last year and all our members who continue to support one another via the forum, attend events and meetings and contribute to the campaign.

Finally a reminder that this is YOUR campaign, we are working for you and for all victims of tax credits.  Please continue to support us in this work.

Kind regards,

Paula Dean

Please note that we are not tax professionals and are working on a voluntary basis, unpaid, in our ‘free time’. Between us, we have a lot of experience and knowledge in this area, gained over the last few years of supporting victims and helping them fight for justice and their rights. But legislation, operating practice and individual cases change all the time. While we aim to be professional and accurate at all times, please understand the circumstances we are working under, and accept our support, guidance and information in the sprit it is offered; goodwill and camaraderie.
