HMRC Try To Bury New Overpayment Figures

Graham27th May 2010

HMRC have published Tax Credit overpayment figures for 2008-09 today, trying to slip them out under the cover of their latest data loss scandal.

Yes folks, HMRC would prefer to admit sending out other peoples data to 50,000 Tax Credit claimants rather than be up-front about the latest overpayment statistics. We will be writing to the Information Commissioner about this latest data loss, but for now let’s concentrate on the overpayment figures …

Here’s a summary of the Tax Credit overpayment figures for 2008-2009 :

  • There were a total of 6,996,000 claims for Tax Credits
  • 1,036,000 claims were overpaid by a total of £917,000,000
  • This means that 14.81% of all Tax Credit claims were overpaid
  • 842,000 claims were overpaid less than £500
  • Claims overpaid between £500 and £1,000 were 212,000
  • 147,000 claims overpaid £1,000 – £2,000
  • 85,000 very unhappy claimants will be repaying between £2,000 and £5,000
  • Some 20,000 claimants have overpayments of greater than £5,000

Once again, we are reminded of the sheer number of lives that are being ruined by Tax Credit overpayments.

My daughter is beside herself, she received a letter yesterday saying that she has been overpaid £5500. Everytime she received a letter she phoned to confirm that the payment was right, which they said it was. Then they went onto say that she never declared her partners earnings, which is clearly on the form. How on earth can she pay this back, when she is struggling as it is. They have a mortgage, work hard and for what – NOTHING. She cannot afford childcare now, so she can’t work. These people must sit there and say ‘here’s another one we can screw’. Those that told her it was correct should be disciplined by sacking, as they are in the wrong. All I can say is “BRING IT ON”.

over the last year, i have repeatedly asked this tax office to stop putting money into my account – their response -> ‘it will sort its self out in next years payments.’ Yesterday we got a bill for nearly £1800 – gave up on trying to talk to them and wrote a letter demanding justification as i am in debt through their refusal to stop giving me money!
I would rather not have it than be billed for something they have cocked up on. When i first complained, they said i had been overpaid because i said i was on Income Support – NO – on their forms, i clearly stated that i was on qualifying Contribution Based Job Seekers Allowance.
The whole things a shocking mess – wish i’d never gone there in the first place.

I too am having to repay an over payment last year my husband was made redundant I work part time because I work over22hrs per week we was not entitled to any income support I was left trying to pay at £751 mortgage and feed and cloth 2 children on £800 per month The job centre told us to claim WFTC which we did this provided us with an additional £400 which enabled me to feed my family. My husband secured in employment in November we declared income and told them the WFTC stopped. However in April 10 we were presented with a bill for over payment of £1300 but the strange thing is we have declared an estimated income for this year and they are still putting money into our accoutn despite many request both written and by telephone to have these stopped. I just wonder how much more they are going to be asking for come next tax year!

My girlfriend is 8 months pregnant and we have just been told we owe the tax office 2000 pounds. Great.

Someone tell that stupid queen of ours to stop splashing out on war, corrupt banks and dodgy popes so that she can concentrate on her own people.

just had agreat conversation with the lady at WFTC! It seems it makes no difference that you update any changes in your salary they will still overpay you and ask for it back later! Such a wonderful system! I informed them 3 times in 2009 of our change in income due to redundancty and then re employment, but why???? To end up with an overpayment of £2600! (Thats not including previous years that we are still paying off!) dont bother appealing, as I did, and was told because I telephoned my information through, and did not put it in writing they will not look into it! HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!
I have offered to pay £50.00 per month and have been told it will take too long so I have to phone them back and complete an expense form (over the phone lol!)

BEWARE to all of you who claim the childcare element of tax credits. I updated my details as requested by tax credits, tried to update sooner but was told I couldnt as they were updating thier systems.

I have now recieved a letter wanting all documentation ie contract between myself and the nursery and all the reciepts of money paid. I never kept them as I never thought I would be needing them. Tories you are making Britain WORSE NOT BETTER I am now at my wits end with these people as I no longer revieve anything towards my childcare witch was a genuine application unlike some who have now ruined it for the rest of us.
The MPS HARDLY SET A GOOD EXAMPLE OF HONESTY AND GOOD MORALS!!!

I have been overpaid by £7,000 in 2005-2008, from which £3000 was their mistake in calculation and £4000 is my debt, even though I have provided with up to date info about my salary and asked them to stop paying me. It`s been 3 years since, but I still can`t afford to pay off my debt, as they didn`t accept installments. Since 2009, they haven`t got in touch with me. Now I`m wondering if they have forgotten about me or waiting until I get a job.
    What do you think?

P.S. I think the whole system of HMRC is to borrow money to people in need and than make them into debt.

I have been sent several bills totalling to an overpayment of nearly £1900 I rang and spoke to their representative and he offered for me to pay the money back over 3 years by direct debit. which I am doing now. In 2 years time I should be retiring but don’t want to be paying £50 a month out of my pension. I don’t know how we got into this mess as I have always given them the correct figures. Some of these overpayments go back as far as 2007

Well what a shock when we got a letter to say we have been overpaid by £8018 from the start of march 09.
I declared all income from that date I was on Job seekers allowance and my wife was working full time, they were provided with payslips and P60,S but they still insisted we qualified for Working Tax Credits, so on that basis we accepted the payments, after i found partime employment in May 2010 I informed them of change of earnings immediately via the telephone and was sent a new award notice which was adjusted as they say to the correct level.

In July 2011 the letter arrived saying they overpaid us and we should never have recieved any W T C . in the first place.

I am using the templates on this website to fight their incompetence and hope to get a Just and fair hearing from HMRC.

I too have been advised on recent notice that we have been overpaid £1963 in ctc, I work a different job than I did last year and rang and advised this (significant drop in salary) all information given accurately and to the best of my knowledge, since taking a lower salary my hubbie has not worked for 12 mths nor claimed, my council tax alone is £2000 and right now I do not have money for food surely this is wrong!! I sent a letter mid July but not heard anything!!! what would you do?????

Well year three of our saga and once again conflict from those that know best! In 2010 I was informed by TC that my partner and I had been over paid by £404 and that our TC would be reduced to repay some of the over payment. After lengthy conversation as to how this had happened I was informed that it was because our wages had increased in that year period and therefore it was classed as an overpayment. To this I would like to add that wage increase was around £3k, as I had to take on on-call duties to cover our private rent that was very expensive. As with most people here I argued with them that the change in circumstances was below that of their criteria and that in order to make sure that this did not happen again and to clear the amount they could withhold all payments until it was paid off. Over the past year I have had not a penny from them even though they told me I could not close my claim until the next renewal period April 2011. Yes I know now that was crap but at the time like the amount they had overpaid I accepted their apparent knowledge on this and agreed that on the next renewal I did not want to renew. 2011 arrives along with the renewal documents that I did not want and guess what? I could not get through for three months to discuss the issue with them. Well now I apparently have had yet another overpayment for last year too and despite not having a penny from them I am now in excess of the original figure. Over the past two days I have received yet more letters stating my claim has been closed and that I owe £246 in one letter and then today it has dropped to £125 but I was informed yesterday that they would have to add in this years money too so it would be likely that I was looking at £500. Can anyone with a bit of savvy work out how I am managing to increase my debt with no payments to me? As I sure as hell cant. Problem is they have you on this as you cant afford a solicitor to fight the case and if you don’t fight you will end up paying something that you may not owe. Its ironic really that in three weeks I have had several letters from the CSA saying they have under paid me and they wont be making up the difference and the TC have apparently overpaid me nothing and I have to pay them £500. One could ask which is the more incompetent department? As a Civil Servant for the MoD (yes I have a proper job that pays crap and we have to get it right or we get sacked) I am discussed that these morons are the only real public view that the rest of the country seems to see and believe me they are not representative of the Gov Department that I work for. I have informed the department that I will be making a complaint and that I will fight the case myself. If anyone can offer any assistance on this then please email me or leave advice on here. Good luck to you all in clearing your names too. Regards Tracy

    Hi,
We are in the same situation as everyone else who has posted here. Our overpayment(s)total £11,000 which we have tried and failed to stop over the last 6 years. This Saturday I am going to speak to my local MP who happens to be Conservative. I will be arming myself with all the relevant information from this site, as I have no idea how much he knows about the extent of this problem. I am also hoping he will see my husband and I as future voters! I will let you all know the outcome of this meeting next week. All the best to everyone,
    Susan

Well, Well, Having a heart condition and CVOPD AND BEEN FORCED to retire due to ill health, I have found that I have fallen into the same trap as numerous others, as usual HMG MANIPULATE the people they are elected to look after but abuse instead. We are british citizens who have no rights. However if we were not of our country we would be given all the help we requested. Anybody wish to buy an out of the way island and live off the land? because this country is no longer for the people born and bred here. Mr Cameron you should be ashamed of yourself.

Monday gone i check my account to see how much i have after a long January, as it was pay day inwas expecting to see around 1900 but i had 2800. Examing my online statement i saw a payment from HMRC SA for £970.30. I called up HMRC and the lady i spoke to could not find anybrecord of it. I have work for a local authority for around 6 years and change roles and payba few times but have never filled in any self assessments or anything. The lady said j should write to HMRC and ask them to investigate. I intend to do no such thing.
