First AGM A Success      13 November 2008

Tax Credit Casualties first ever AGM was successfully held, in Rotherham, on Saturday 8th November. Jess travelled to Rotherham from the far north-west of England, and Ali & the Webmaster joined in over the internet. Many thanks to Sarah and Jess for their live commentary on both Microsoft Messenger and the TCC Forum.

Introductions were followed by reports from the Chair, Treasurer and 3rd Sector, with Ali providing a Union Update.

Nominations for the Management Committee had been received, and were voted upon. The new Committee were unanimously elected, with 26 votes 'for' and none 'against'. Thank you to all of the people who registered as Voting Members and submitted their votes via this website. We couldn't have done it without you!

The meeting was closed after discussing future plans and two items of other business.

Annual General Meeting 2008     24 October 2008

The first Annual General Meeting of Tax Credit Casualties is scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday 8th November in Rotherham, with the time and venue to be confirmed.

All Voting Members are entitled to attend and to vote for the Management Committee. Items for consideration and the meeting need to be sent to sarah@taxcc.org by the end of Tuesday 28th October at the latest.

To help in the booking of a suitable venue please email sarah@taxcc.org, as soon as possible, and let her know if you are planning to attend.

We do appreciate the logistics of getting to Rotherham are not viable for everyone, and we want to make sure your voice is heard, regardless of whether or not you can physically attend the meeting. So you will also be able to cast your vote on the TCC website, between 30th October and 5th November – but you MUST register as a Voting Member beforehand.

The AGM Agenda and Reports are available from our AGM 2008 page.

E-mails about AGM voting will be sent to Voting Members on 30th October 2008.

The AGM is important as you need to have an elected Management Committee to work on your campaign in the coming year. The meeting will also give you a chance to have your say on how we have performed so far and what we will do in the coming year.

'Diary of the Damned'      7 October 2008

We are pleased to announce that Tax Credit Casualties now have a blog - Diary of the Damned is the blog where Tax Credit overpayment victims can speak out, using their own words, and let the world know just how really, really bad the whole Tax Credit system is!

Ideally, we would like to post your day-to-day nightmares of dealing with the Tax Credit Office, so that it can be a diary that tells it like it really is. But, if you've got anything that needs saying, and it's printable, please send it in. Except for bad language, it really will be unedited and exactly in your own words.

Please send your e-mails to Blog@TaxCC.org - let's tell everyone what's really happening!

The TCC Blog has also been added to the buttons on the left.

Discussion Paper Response      30 September 2008

In July, we told you that HMRC had published a discussion paper, Tax Credits: Improving Delivery and Choice, and said that we wanted your views before issuing a reply. That's now been done, with our response compiled and submitted, on time, by Sarah.

You can read the TCC Response to the Discussion Document here.

The LITRG have also published a response. Their document, Tax Credits - First things first, gives an editorial overview - and you can read the extensive LITRG response here.

'When Tax Credits Go Bad'      4 September 2008

Over the past few weeks, TCC have been taking part in the production of a short film entitled 'When Tax Credits Go Bad', which has now been completed - and is excellent !

The film was made by John Stratford and Bill Ross, who are both volunteers with Helium Films - the name adopted by the voluntary project CSV Community Films.

CSV Community Films is a joint undertaking between CSV and BBC Radio Sheffield, with the involvement of the BBC Big Screen project in Rotherham. Voluntary Action Rotherham is also associated with the project. The aim of the project is to produce films to support voluntary, community and faith sector organisations and groups in the South Yorkshire region, thus raising awareness and strengthening voluntary action in the region. It also aims to train young and disabled volunteers in video making.

A huge thank-you to John Stratford, Bill Ross, Andy Kershaw and everyone who took part !!

New Team Member      1 September 2008

We would like to welcome Lucy to the Tax Credit Casualties team, filling the volunteer role of Fundraising Officer that we have been advertising on the website for the past few months.

With five years experience of fundraising, Lucy has an impressive and successful track record. Apart from running her own business, Lucy is a mother to four children - whilst studying for both 'A' levels and a Degree!

Welcome to the team, Lucy!

Please note that we are not tax professionals and are working on a voluntary basis, unpaid, in our ‘free time’. Between us, we have a lot of experience and knowledge in this area, gained over the last few years of supporting victims and helping them fight for justice and their rights. But legislation, operating practice and individual cases change all the time. While we aim to be professional and accurate at all times, please understand the circumstances we are working under, and accept our support, guidance and information in the sprit it is offered; goodwill and camaraderie.
